At present Chirag is 20 years of age and is leading a near normal active life and performing all his daily chores without anybody’s essential help.

His story starts at the very beginning when he contracted the dreaded disease – Polio very early in his life at around one and a half years of age. His financial condition did not allow him the luxury of expensive treatments and hence he initially took treatment from the government hospital i.e. L.G. hospital and when no recovery was in sight, he then consulted a private hospital with unsatisfactory results.

During this difficult period he took admission in primary school and tried to lead a normal life. But fate had other ideas. He used to crawl on all four and found it difficult to stand for a long time. Yet he continued studying till the 8th standard and due to the fact that the 9th standard class was on the second floor and it would have been a hazardous task for him to climb the stairs daily, he left schooling and remained at home.

He then consulted Polio Foundation and through our team of doctors and paramedics, he was operated on his left leg successfully and provided calipers from the foundation itself.

Heena’s is one more case where the foundation has been inspirational in providing the healing touch to a handicapped person’s life. Heena contracted polio since childhood and the financial condition notwithstanding she was operated for the same in Mumbai and provided calipers to walk around. But subsequently she found it difficult to carry out her daily activities and hence stopped wearing the calipers after two years. With much difficulty she completed her elementary schooling and did her grad uation in Primary Teacher’s Training course (PTC).

Yet Heena was in much pain and was in constant agony. To ease her pain, she was referred to various doctors and subsequently landed up at the doorstep of Polio foundation. She was successfully operated upon and then her life has really changed for the better.

She is now able to stand up straight and perform her daily activities without much discomfort. Her gait strength has increased and her walk is brisk almost like a normal person. She is now able to walk with a walking stick also. Hence forth she is now employed as a primary school teacher at a village called Damnagar, taluka – Gariyadhar, district – Amreli, Saurashtra.

She is a shining example of how the Polio Foundation has rehabilitated a handicapped person’s life and med her independent.

Another feather has been added to the success story history at Polio foundation. Suhana was also stricken with Polio since childhood and even after regular consultations with orthopedicians in her area, she was not advised operation by any of the doctors. Hence life had become hell for her. She was not able to walk normally and was also not able to stand properly. She had to sit down within a few minutes as her leg would give away. Her difficulty was so pronounced that her heels were not touching the ground even while standing.

Inspite of all these difficulties and problems she continued her education and tried her level best to minimize her pains and try to lead a normal life. Yet it was a tough task to do so on her part.

Once doctors at Polio foundation took a look at her and examined her properly, she was advised operative procedures and the girl and her family readily agreed. Subsequently she was operated upon successfully and provided calipers for her regular activities. With proper physiotherapy and guidance, she was able to walk without difficulty and most importantly she started climbing stairs too and the real dream was when she started to bicycle too. This was a real dream success for all involved and for the family of Suhana.

She is now successfully continuing her education and is studying in the 9th standard. Her success story will surely act as an inspiration for many handicapped children plagued with such difficulties.
