Success Strories - Just one voice out of plenty

Priyanshi Hasmukhlal

Age: 5 years

Priyanshi’s case is one where the foundation has been inspirational, more through its physiotherapy treatment in providing the healing touch to a child suffering from a congenital anomaly.

Priyanshi is a child suffering from the lesser known and insignificantly documented cerebral palsy disorder, which has now significantly assumed greater proportions and is in the limelight because of the debilitation it causes in new born children.

The girl is an only child of her parents who can ill afford the costly treatment including regular physiotherapy which is a prerequisite in such patients. Her father is hardly able to make ends meet, working as a small time assistant in a medical centre in a village outside Ahmedabad.

Polio Foundation took up the initiative to treat and manage the debilitation of Priyanshi and performed the necessary surgical procedures free of cost. Moreover her transportation costs are now looked into by the Ramilaben Jain trust.

She is now able to stand up straight and walk around without much discomfort. She is now able to go to school on a regular basis also.

Polio Foundation has been able to rehabilitate the child to some extent but is unable to cure her hearing and speech defects which are a part and parcel of cerebral palsy disorders.

Satyaprakash Kishansingh Rajput - 99240 42271

Age: 22 years

Fate had dealt a cruel blow to Satyaprakash. A tailor by profession, he was unable to use his legs to perform his daily routine and earn for the family.

Coming from a very poor family of 4 members including an elder brother who handled odd jobs like masonry and house painting to add to the household income, Satyaprakash felt very helpless and unhappy as he was able to contribute only about 600 - 700 Rs. per month. His disability notwithstanding, he tried valiantly to increase his burden of work but to no avail.

He then consulted Polio Foundation and through our team of doctors and paramedics, he was successfully operated for right hip and knee release and plantar tenotomy and was provided two different calipers from the foundation itself.

After regular physiotherapy, Satyaprakash can now work for more number of hours and carry out his daily chores with aplomb and ease. He can now carry out all types of tailoring work and increase his monthly income.

His jobless parents know no bounds of happiness to see their son settled in life despite the inherent disability and it seems Polio Foundation has helped satisfy the needs of another poverty stricken household.

Jatin Purshottam Parmar - 98985 76385

This is one more case where Polio Foundation has enabled a young person to achieve success in life – to work and educate himself and learn to be self sufficient.

Operated in 18/4/2008.

Left leg totally bent. Repaired after operation. Now able to move freely and perform his own activities.

Suffering from the debilitating disease – Polio he somehow managed to complete his graduation and obtained a job as a computer teacher at a computer institute. He hails from a family where he has to feed 3 sisters and two brothers. His father used to navigate an auto rickshaw on hire after losing his job as a diamond worker due to the recession.

It was very difficult for him to move around and perform his daily routine of activities and transportation was a big headache.

Subsequent to his operation at Polio Foundation, he his now able to use all modes of transportation to reach his destination of work and help out in the daily chores at home also

Gopal Pasabhai Bharwad
Age: 14 years

A multitude of cases abound at Polio Foundation where the children affected with polio or cerebral palsy have been treated, operated and rehabilitated successfully.

Gopal’s case is one more such incident where he was suffering from Polio right from his birth. Being the elder of two children, his parents were worried for his upbringing and future course of action. Moreover his income was measly and could not afford to provide costly operative surgery and medication to his children.

Polio Foundation once again became the saving grace for this family and operated on the 14 month old child and provided calipers for his proper ambulatory movement. Since then it has been a happy ending for this family as Gopal now is able to walk and run independently and perform most of his chores on his own.

Rekhaben Sonjiben Pattani
Age: 12 years

The background seems characteristically similar. A large family – 7 members including herself, lower socio-economic strata of society, a seriously debilitating illness and inability to perform personal tasks. Polio has been known to affect such children and Rekha is one such polio affected child.

Her days began with sorrow for herself and her family as she was unable to perform her tasks on her own and she was slowly becoming a liability for her parents.

It is during this time that they approached Polio Foundation for her rehabilitation programme and the doctors readily accepted the challenge and operated upon her and post physiotherapy, she was fit to resume her daily activities.

It was really heartening to see this girl perform her activities on her own and take care of her own self. A glad smile on her parents’ face added a sparkle to the moment.

Varshaben Laljibhai Chaudhari
Age: 15 years

A rare and queer case where the girl was operated upon for Polio corrective surgery and due to the failure of the operative procedure, contractures developed and she had a disability of around 50-60% in her leg.

Her financial condition did not allow her the luxury for another surgery in a private hospital and hence she had to live with the defect. It is at this time that Polio Foundation extended its ever spreading healing touch and performed a right knee release procedure and also provided the girl with calipers.

She is now able to stand up straight and walk around without much discomfort. She is now able to go to school and is able to help her mother and father in their daily chores too
